![]() *** YOUR DAILY DO'S – March 29th, MORNING EDITION *** Wendi Lindquist Question: How many of you grew up with copies of “50 things you can do to save the planet” or “50 things kids to do to save the planet”? I had these and many other environmental books on my bookshelf as a kid, dutifully purchased by my parents who were trying to support my growing interest in science. Fast forward a lot of years, and I’m now explaining to my parents why still important to help save the planet. In fact, I recently had an hour-long phone conversation with my mom (a Fox news watcher) about climate change. The woman who paid for science camps and science books had a hard time believing in “global warming.” So I switched the conversation, and explained how “global warming” was not a term coined by scientists, but one used by the media to explain a very complex series of global climate changes. Long story short, I think I made some headway, but we still have a long way to go before she full embraces the environmental movement. Your do’s for this morning are much, much easier than debating a climate-change denier. ********************** 1. LOCAL ENVIRONMENT: Yesterday, Mayor Ed Murray announced that the City of Seattle was suing the federal government over its stance regarding Sanctuary Cities. Murray argued that the federal government lacked the constitutional authority to keep funds from the city (and other communities like it) simply because of its status as a Sanctuary City. Take a moment to show your support for Seattle, King County, Snohomish County, and many other Washington state communities that welcome all residents regardless of their legal status. Call the Department of Justice and tell them to reject Attorney General Sessions call to pull funding for Sanctuary Cities, in support of one of president’s executive orders. WILDLIFE: In the past, the president has claimed that no one calls to complain. We’ll let’s give him a call. Contact the White House today to urge the president not to sign House Joint Resolution 69. This bill overturns existing rules that prevent appalling hunting practices on national preserves in Alaska. These include: killing of hibernating bears and wolves with newborns, using steel-jawed traps or food bait to get bear kills etc. It was opposed by the Sierra Club, the Humane Society, and Alaska wildlife protection groups. This bill passed the House and Senate on party lines. It now sits on the President's desk. As a Northwesterner I oppose this appalling bill which turns hunting into murder. ********************** 3. ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENTS: Introverts, readers, and those of you looking for good bus or potty reads, I’ve got an interesting article for you. Read the Article DEEPER Shade of Green - Sierra club Political movements have often focused on the interests of one group at the expense of others. That has been true with the environmental movement. It’s not a quick read (but I promise it’s much shorter than Moby Dick), but if you’re interested in how the environmental movement can appeal to a broader audience or why it hasn’t always had the interests of Native Americans, African Americans, and other “Others” in mind, check out this piece by the second person of color and first black man to serve as president of the Sierra Club: http://www.sierraclub.org/change/2017/03/deeper-shade-green **********************
