Once Upon a Time............
During the presidential campaign last year, a small-town newspaper in Oklahoma called the Enid News & Eagle endorsed a Democrat (Hillary Clinton) for the first time in the paper's modern history, saying that the Republican nominee lacked "the skills, expertise and temperament to hold office" (https://tinyurl.com/gpxtjnb).
(How right they are turning out to be, eh?)
The paper, deep in red country, took a hit for this, losing subscribers and ad revenue (https://tinyurl.com/hfx4uqr).
This is a real shame because newspapers, especially small-town ones, are a vital resource for their communities, and many have been on thin economic ice for years.
AT THE SAME TIME, the Garfield County Congressman (Chad Caldwell - R) received an F from the Sierra Club's 2015 Legislative Scorecard - this is a person who voted for deregulation of groundwater safety and clean air standards. #DontBeAHeroChad#IsObviouslySomethingSomeoneSaidToHimAlready
Here's our chance to win-win-win:
  • We can reward the Enid News for making a difficult and principled editorial decision.
  • We can rebuild an underdog Democratic party so deep in red country it would stain your teeth.
  • And we can win a fight for the environment by supporting the party that could oust Chad "I Like My Coffee Like I Like My Groundwater: Gritty and Burned-Tasting" Caldwell in 2018.
HOW, you ask?
Susan McLaughlin has the answer for us. She reached out to Garfield County and asked how we could help, the developed this kickass sisterdistricthood for us to absolutely SLAY. Update to shout out the unbelievable partnership of Jessica Williams-Nguyen, a researcher for the Do's team who became the point person on this project and shepherded it to the finish line. THANK YOU Sue and Jessica!
YES. We are raising money for Garfield County Democrats to buy a weekly ad in the Enid News & Eagle for a year, so they can advertise who they are, and share what they're doing in their community. YES, we are giving a big fat finger to media silencers and polluters. YES, we are sending a shitload of love down Oklahoma way.

Step 1: The social media bump. Like these organizations on Facebook and follow on Twitter to increase their digital presence.
  • - Enid News & Eagle (@enidnews): https://www.facebook.com/enidnews/
  • - Garfield County Democrats: https://tinyurl.com/hal937k, https://tinyurl.com/juhj2rt
  • - Oklahoma Democratic Party (@OkDemocrats): https://www.facebook.com/okdemocrats/
Step 2: Donate $20 (or whatever you're comfortable with) to purchase ad space for the Garfield County Democrats in the Enid News & Eagle.
- Our goal is $10,400, which is the cost to buy an ad spot in the Fri/Sat paper for one year.
- This group is made up of 26,000 members, so if half of us donated a single dollar we'd be there with room to spare. This is a chance to see the power of a group of our size and commitment. I am SO excited to see what we can do.
Step 3: Comment below with the amount of your donation, and what you are drinking right this minute. I'm just curious. :) (no postings here)
