*** YOUR DAILY DO’S – MONDAY, 7 AM ***

Picture

This week we will be doing a fair amount of pushing back against the administration’s bottomless Mary Poppins bag of AAAAAAHHHHH, but we’re also going to keep pushing for our own priorities, with #FromWAWithLove, and #GoLong to fund our state’s education.
We’re also trying something new this morning with the Do’s format – this top post will only have the barest of bare-bones info. The first comments below will cover each of the Do’s in more detail (including contact info, call scripts, links to resources, etc.) What do y’all think?
  • 1. Resist ICE Raids – This weekend more than 600 people were arrested for future deportation. Give $5 to help them fight their legal battles.
  • 2. Contact Senators about Russia Special Committee – Dear DJT, You were put into office by a hostile foreign power and we aren’t going to drop it. #FromWAWithLove
  • 3. Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions – House Bill hearing TODAY!

ICE RAIDs

1. ICE RAIDS - This weekend more than 600 people were arrested for future deportation. What can we do in our community?

The short answer is, not as much as we want to do. The ICE is federal and operates independently of our city and state law enforcement.

As the situation is still developing, we are going to have more actions throughout the week on protecting our vulnerable neighbors. There are petitions circulating and other actions that our team is vetting, and if anyone has any immigrant support resources to add please comment here.

For now, orgs need your dollars to fight this awfulness in court:

PLEASE GIVE at least $5 to the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, and comment when you’ve done it so we can track our give!

Russia

2. RUSSIA - Funny how Russia started popping up in mainstream media again end of last week, and this weekend ICE stages raids all over the country! Huh! That’s a funny coincidence! There is mounting evidence that this President was put into place by a hostile foreign power for the purposes of destabilizing America. So we’re keeping the heat on Russia. If you called last week, GREAT! Call again please. #FromWAWithLove!

McConnell Mitch McConnell (ph: 202-224-2541, fax: 202-224-2499): "I am calling to request that the majority leader form a special select committee to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 US elections. Standing committees have other business to attend to and this matter to too important to our country to be a side project. The American people demand answers. And it is the job of the US Congress to provide them. The integrity of our elections and the office of the president is NOT a partisan matter. Create a special select committee on Russia immediately."

McCain (ph: 202-224-2235, fax: 202-228-2862) and Graham (ph: 202-224-5972, fax: 202-224-3808): "I am calling to thank the senator for his prior support of a special select committee to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 US elections. Please continue to push hard for this. Standing committees have other business to attend to and this matter to too important to our country to be a side project. The American people demand answers. And it is the job of the US Congress to provide them. Please note that I've also communicated this message to Majority Leader McConnell."

Murray and Cantwell (use your local office numbers): "I am calling to request that the senator strongly support of a special select committee to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 US elections. Standing committees have other business to attend to and this matter to too important to our country to be a side project. The American people demand transparency and information. Please note that I've also communicated this message to Majority Leader McConnell."

Climate Change

3. CALL ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE -
Do you want to see WA State adopt carbon emission targets that actually avoid climate catastrophe?

HB 1372 has a last minute hearing scheduled for TODAY! (Monday 1:30pm)

Please call today to ask that this bill be voted out of committee this week (before the cutoff on Friday for state bills to advance).

HB 1372 calls for reducing emissions to 91% below 1990 levels by 2050. This is consistent with reaching 350ppm carbon in the atmosphere at the end of the century, and hits the levels needed to avoid climate destruction. A competing bill (HB1144) sets emission targets at 80% below '90 levels, but a reduction of 80% still contributes too much carbon to the atmosphere compounding with the buildup from the past century. In 2100 we'll end up with higher concentrations of carbon than our current levels, and it's not a big enough reduction in emissions to avoid severe climate change effects.

*** CALL: the Environment Committee members (see script & contacts below)

"Hi, my name is ___ and I'm a registered voter in WA state. As a member of the Environment committee, you represent me and the whole state. I'm calling to ask that you vote HB 1372 out of committee this week. This bill sets emission targets that are based on the most updated climate science. The bill's target for 2050 of 91% reduction from 1990 carbon emissions levels is the necessary level to avoid catastrophic effects of climate change."
