Advice from PN PLEASE know that:
(1) You will not able to sign up. Trump's team is looking at reactivating the Bush-era NSEERS registry, which operates based on national origin. So unless you are a visitor or immigrant from one of the countries that the Trump administration lists, you CAN'T "register" yourself. (2) Keep in mind that this isn't a purely right-wing/Republican issue. President Obama left NSEERS in place for his first few years in office, but he also left the regulation that created NSEERS intact until this day. All that the Trump administration has to do when he enters office is pick a new list of countries to target. (3) A "Muslim registry" will probably happen. This is just the reality of the situation. NSEERS is still alive and well, just dormant. Trump has already picked Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions as his Attorney General. The AG designates the listed countries under NSEERS. What people can do is: (1) Find and support pro bono legal services organizations, especially immigration focused ones, because people will probably have to register and comply with very specific requirements (i.e. phone in once a month) or face deportation. Lawyer friends, consider volunteering more, or at least helping to spread information on registration requirements. After 9/11, while NSEERS did not achieve a SINGLE terrorism-related conviction, it DID lead to the deportation of thousands of males from Arab/Muslim countries for failure to understand and comply with all the rules of NSEERS. |

(Some of us are old enough to remember Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood, Bill Clinton's two AG appointments, who had to withdraw for failing to pay Social Security taxes.) Let's not assume this is a done deal.
